About the Course
Description:
This 1-hour continuing education course is required for all licensed healthcare practitioners in Florida and is designed to meet the needs of Licensed Midwives by addressing HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and compliance with Florida laws and clinical protocols. The course provides an overview of Chapter 381, Florida Statutes, and Rule 64D-2, Florida Administrative Code, with a focus on confidentiality, testing, informed consent, and reporting requirements specific to midwifery and maternal care. Participants will learn how to apply universal precautions, manage potential HIV exposure risks in the clinical and birth setting, and provide counseling and education to clients in a sensitive and legally compliant manner. Key topics include: Overview of HIV transmission, prevention, and treatment basics Florida statutes governing HIV testing, consent, and reporting Confidentiality protections under state and federal law (including HIPAA) Midwife responsibilities in counseling, recordkeeping, and partner notification Clinical protocols for infection control and post-exposure management Reducing stigma and promoting culturally competent care Instruction is provided through recorded lectures, case-based scenarios, and interactive review questions. Participants must achieve a minimum passing score of 80% on the final quiz to receive credit.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Describe the modes of HIV transmission and effective prevention strategies in maternal and newborn care.
Interpret Florida laws governing HIV testing, informed consent, confidentiality, and reporting.
Apply universal precautions and infection control measures in out-of-hospital and clinical settings.
Recognize the ethical and legal responsibilities of midwives in managing HIV-related care.
Demonstrate culturally sensitive communication when counseling clients about HIV prevention and testing.
