About Heritage School of Midwifery
"Educating Generations, Empowering Birth"
At HSM, we are passionate about preserving and passing on the rich heritage of midwifery to the next generation. Midwifery is more than a profession—it is a calling, a culture, and a labor of love. We invite those who share our passion for childbirth to join us in learning both the art and science of midwifery.
Our Programs
HSM offers three distinct pathways to support your journey in maternal healthcare:
Certificate in Maternal Health Medical Assisting (CMHMA)
Our 8-month certificate program equips students to provide essential support in maternal and newborn healthcare settings. Graduates are prepared to work as medical assistants in physician offices, birth centers, and maternal health clinics, with specialized training in women’s and infant health.
CMHMA graduates may also serve as midwifery/birth assistants and can transition seamlessly into HSM’s midwifery programs with advanced standing.
Associate of Applied Science in Direct Entry Midwifery (AAS)
Our robust 3-year direct-entry midwifery program blends asynchronous online coursework with in-person skill intensives and clinical training through the traditional preceptor model. Students begin by observing and progressively take on more responsibility, eventually assisting a licensed midwife with prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
Upon successful completion, graduates receive a Associate of Applied Science in Direct Entry Midwifery and are eligible to sit for the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) exam, leading to licensure as a Florida Licensed Midwife (LM) and certification as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).
Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BSM)
Designed for licensed midwives (LMs) and/or Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), the BSM program advances professional standing to the bachelor’s level. This fully online program accepts up to 90 transfer credits and requires 30 upper-division credits completed at HSM.
The BSM prepares midwives for leadership roles in education, advocacy, global maternal health, and expanded practice pathways, integrating evidence-based practice with the Midwives Model of Care™.

Our Mission
Guiding Principles
Our mission at Heritage School of Midwifery is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become competent and caring midwives. We aim to instill a deep respect for birth, promote evidence-based practices, and nurture a commitment to supporting women and families throughout their birthing journey. HSM will preserve the art and science of quality midwifery care and secure ongoing access to excellent maternity care by educating future midwives and cast the vision for passing along this wealth of wisdom from generation to generation. Our success will be measured by seeing the number of midwives in Florida grow as our students reach their full potential and graduate and become licensed.
Quality Education
Comprehensive Curriculums
HSM’s robust 3-year midwifery program combines traditional coursework with hands-on clinical experience. Students observe and eventually assist a Florida Licensed Midwife with prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. Upon completing the program, graduates earn a Diploma in Midwifery and are eligible to sit for the NARM exam, leading to licensure as a Florida Licensed Midwife (LM) and certification as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). HSM also offers a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BSM) for licensed midwives, advancing professional standing through online upper-division coursework, and an 8-month Certificate in Maternal Health Medical Assisting (CMHMA), preparing students for maternal and newborn healthcare support roles with the option to transition into midwifery programs.
Empowering Community
Building Support Networks
We believe in creating a strong community of midwifery students and professionals who support and uplift each other. Our programs encourage collaboration, mentorship, and advocacy, fostering a network of passionate birth advocates committed to improving maternal and infant health outcomes. Students build lasting connections through peer learning, faculty engagement, and shared clinical experiences. This supportive environment empowers graduates to enter the field with confidence, purpose, and a sense of belonging.
Hands-On Training & Hybrid Learning Environment
Real-World Experience
Practical training is an essential part of our midwifery programs. Students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, working alongside experienced midwives and healthcare professionals to gain valuable hands-on experience. To support flexibility and accessibility, all didactic (non-hands-on) coursework is offered asynchronously online, allowing students to engage with lectures, readings, and assignments on their own schedule.
Holistic Approach
Mind-Body-Spirit Care
We emphasize a holistic approach to midwifery care, recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. Our students learn to provide comprehensive care that respects the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of mothers and babies. This philosophy is woven throughout our curriculum, shaping both clinical practice and classroom learning. Graduates are prepared to support diverse birthing individuals with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and evidence-based care.
